About SCHMS

The Scientific Conference of Hellenic Medical Students (SCHMS) is one of the most significant events organized by the Scientific Society of Hellenic Medical Students (SSHMS). It is ranked among the most longstanding and well-attended medical conferences in Greece.

It has been held annually and uninterruptedly since 1994, hosted each year by a different branch of the SSHMS. The academic community has warmly embraced the SCHMS, as evidenced by the participation of thousands of medical students from both Greece and abroad, as well as students from related Health Sciences faculties and hundreds of Professors.

Through the SCHMS, students are given the opportunity to develop scientific and research projects that align with their interests, become familiar with the process of writing and presenting scientific papers, engage with renowned professors, and connect with peers from across Greece and internationally.

The conference’s topics consistently cover a broad spectrum of scientific developments across all medical specialties and cater to the specific interests of every participant.

Research presentations may be delivered individually as Free Announcements or e-Posters, or in teams as Round Table Discussions. In parallel, Practical Seminars (Workshops) are also held.

Since 1997, the Medical Knowledge Olympiad has been a hallmark event of the SCHMS — a competition among students covering both preclinical and clinical subjects. In 2007, the conference expanded internationally, hosting the Forum of Medical Students and Young Doctors with International Participation, which strengthens international scientific collaboration by attracting students, professors, and distinguished scientists from the global medical community.

This year, Ioannina will proudly host the 32nd SCHMS and 20th Forum with International Participation, to be held April 24–26, 2026, at the Hotel Du Lac Congress Center & Spa.

About SSHMS

The Scientific Society of Hellenic Medical Students (SSHMS) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization with branches in all seven Medical Schools of Greece and more than 4,000 active members. It is currently the largest student scientific organization in the field of Health Sciences nationwide.

For over 30 years, its mission has been to advance the scientific education of medical and health science students and to inform the public through educational seminars, conferences, volunteer initiatives, and social interventions. Through its diverse activities, SSHMS promotes scientific and humanitarian engagement, driven by the selfless contribution of students.

Throughout its long-standing course, SSHMS has developed stable collaborations with numerous scientific societies, academic institutions, organizations, and associations. With the support of sponsors, partners, and contributors, SSHMS continues to organize a wide range of nationwide activities.

Among its most notable initiatives are:

  • Medical Invasion (Enhancement of Primary Healthcare Units across more than 60 destinations in Greece)
  • EKYVE (Support of Primary Healthcare Centers in Northern Greece)
  • ABCS³ (Applied Clinical Seminar with Scenarios for Students – Thessaloniki)
  • CCIMS (Clinical Seminar of Internal Medicine – Patras)
  • ECS (Emergency Cases School – Alexandroupolis)
  • MedTrUTH (Medical Training – Larissa)

These initiatives have expanded SSHMS’s field of activity, connecting it with student scientific groups from other Health Sciences faculties and earning it recognition and respect throughout the academic community.

Additionally, during each academic year, every branch organizes numerous educational seminars (such as wound suturing, basic clinical skills, first aid, and CPR workshops), public awareness and volunteer activities (such as blood drives and collection of essential supplies), and scientific and social conferences (on topics like bone marrow donation, sexual health, and medical taboos).

Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, when all activities had to move online, SSHMS managed to adapt, expand, and evolve its content, demonstrating its continuous pursuit of new ways to disseminate knowledge, keep pace with scientific progress, and make the most of every available resource.
